So Much New Music, So Little Time

Well hey there. Sorry I took such a long unintended break, but I'm back and with a new day for posting. Right now I am currently in London studying for the semester, so my schedule is a little different than it usually is, which means I will be publishing my main posts on Mondays with a "Song of the Week" post probably every Wednesday or Thursday.

With all of that housekeeping out of the way, I want to talk about new music. Finally! This time of year is not just my favorite because of the weather and the holidays, but I also love it because so many artists release their albums during this time. Unfortunately I haven't had a lot of time to really delve into the music coming out, but I at least wanted to point out some of my favorite songs released so far and the ones I'm anxious to hear.

First of all, Bruno Mars is back!! This man has not released an album since 2012, so he was way overdue. To be quite honest, I'm not sure how I feel about the song. The track is called "24K Magic" and features lyrics like "Put your pinky rings up to the moon" and "Why you mad? Fix ya face." It's definitely catchy, but I'm still not sure if I like it out not. I guess the jury's still out on this one.

Other people and bands making comebacks are Two Door Cinema Club and Jojo. Both artists I have talked about on this blog before, and both of their albums come out on October 14. I am excited to see what direction they both go in, so that's going to be a good day for me.

One album I can say I genuinely like is the new one from OneRepublic. Titled Oh My My, OneRepublic's fourth album is plain lovely. I really enjoy the risks Ryan Tedder took with his voice on this record, and I like how the album still sounds like OneRepublic while still being able to move forward and evolve. It's a definite must check out for me, and I would recommend taking a listen to "Let's Hurt Tonight" and "Better."

The Weeknd has also released two new songs, and while both are fine songs, I do prefer the energetic "Starboy" over the hectic "False Alarm." Check out his SNL performance last week though where he performed both, as I enjoyed "False Alarm" more when it was performed live.

I honestly think this whole post could be titled comebacks, because guess what singer-songwriter came back and broke everyone's hearts? Yep, Bon Iver. Now I think I might get tomatoes thrown at me for this, but I don't know if I like this new album. The record titled, 22, A Million, is very electronic. Like synthesizers galore. Now that might be some people's thing. I know a lot of people love these new songs, but it's just not my favorite. Sometimes I felt like I had to force myself to listen to some of the tracks just because I love Bon Iver and felt like I had a dedication to him. I advise you take a listen for yourself though. Maybe I'm the one in a million (get my pun?) person that doesn't like the record. Sorry Bon Iver.

Now this track came out of nowhere, but Niall Horan from the boyband One Direction (do I even have to say that at this point?) recently released his first debut single. This is the first music to come from the four guys that previously made up the band. The song is okay...it's kind of boring if I'm to be honest. It's cute. I saw a post where someone said it sounded like an Ed Sheeran song just done more poorly. While I mainly agree, I will say I think Horan sounds better in this song then he ever did in any One Direction song. His voice is clear and strong. I just wish that a different song was picked to be release first. It's not a standout hit, but I do applaud the effort.

Bastille also recently released their second album, which I really like but need to listen to more of. Lady Gaga released her new single "Perfect Illusion", and Carly Rae Jepsen's Emotion Side B is what has been missing from modern pop music.

So yeah. So much new music, and truly not enough time to appreciate it all. As the end of the year approaches, I expect a few other artists to come out of the woodwork and release some new tunes, but until then I have plenty of music to catch up on. If you have any suggestions on new music, let me know, and be sure to check out some of these new tracks!
