7 Songs or Artists that are Impossible to Cover

Hey guys! For this week's post, I wanted to talk about some artists and songs that are just so good or that are so difficult that they are impossible to cover. Now I'm not saying that no one in the history of the world has ever covered these songs well, but I am saying that most people who do cover these songs can just not do them justice. No disrespect to the artists who try, but these guys are in a class all on their own.

1. Whitney Houston

No one can do Whitney justice in my opinion. A lot of people try, some even come close, but there is just something about Houston's voice, tone, and general talent that no one can match. She was one of the best for a reason. Another big factor as to why a lot of people cannot cover her songs is that they are just plain hard to sing. Unless you have one of those big and "diva"-ish voices, it's gonna be hard to hit those belting notes. Probably the hardest Houston songs to do (and the ones that are unfortunately done the most) are "I Will Always Love You" and "I Have Nothing". Two very emotional and very hard songs to sing.

2. Adele

This one doesn't apply to all songs, but most Adele songs are pretty hard to cover. No one has a voice like Adele. She has a great range, but also just the tone of her voice fits most of her songs. They are hard to sing, but they are also hard to sing with as much power as Adele does. So many people cover Adele songs on talent shows like The X-Factor and American Idol, but I honestly haven't heard anything that tops Adeles' versions. She's just got that unique voice. You know when it's her singing instantly.

3. Chandelier // Sia

This song may not seem hard to sing, but I'm going to need you to take a listen again, and then try to sing any part of the chorus. Go on ahead. This song is one of the hardest songs to sing ever. Sia makes these notes sound effortless though, while for any normal human they would probably be straining their voices slightly. Sia also has a really unique voice, so again it's hard to match up to a song that someone has made so distinctive. You need a really wide range to sing this track. It's not an easy task in the slightest.

4. Stay With Me // Sam Smith

I've heard a lot of covers of this song. Maybe some people can do it justice, but in my humble opinion, no one can sing like Smith. He reminds me a lot of Adele in that they both have such powerful voices that no one can really match. Maybe this song isn't the most difficult to sing on this list, but songs are more than just hitting notes. The emotion that bleeds through this song is difficult to recreate, and Smith has such a nice smooth tone throughout the whole song. Most covers I listen to are of people trying to do too much with the track. Sometimes less is more.

5. My All // Mariah Carey

I mean no one could match Mariah Carey back in her prime. If you can hit whistle notes like her, please message me because I'll pay you (not really, maybe a payment of a thumbs up emoji). This song requires a singer with a great range, and Carey shows she can hit the lower notes as well as she can hit those belting notes. Not many people can do this, therefore a lot of covers try to reach these notes, but it doesn't quite work out. This song also has a certain kind of alluring mood and tone that can be hard to recreate.

6. Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson was and forever will be the King of Pop. He has such an iconic and unique voice that no one can cover or do justice. There are a few modern pop artists that I see parts of Jackson's music in their repertoire (see: The Weeknd and Bruno Mars), but no one can upstage Jackson. Not only do his songs require a wide range, but they also require things sort of like hiccups or grunts that only Jackson could really do without it sounding cheesy or forced. His music is distinctive for a reason.

7. To Love You More // CĂ©line Dion

I only enjoy one cover of this song. Look up Lea Michele's version of this song, because it is amazing, but it still does not top Dion's version. Dion makes her notes sound effortless, she doesn't have to reach or strain to hit the notes. This song is just plain difficult to sing, and you really need to be on top of your breathing with all the long and drawn out notes. Between the wide range of notes and the exercise in breath control, the song is very easy to mess up when covering it.

And there you have it, some pretty difficult songs and artists to cover. There are definitely more, but these are the main ones that come to mind. If you have any other great examples, comment below! Have a great week!
